Founded in 1876, Prairie View is the second oldest state-sponsored institution of higher education in Texas. Some 43 miles northwest of Houston, the school has about 7,000 students. The School of Architecture offers bachelor of science degrees in architecture and construction science and masters degrees in architecture and community development. It houses two institutes: the Texas Institute for the Preservation of History and Culture (TIPHC) and the Community Urban and Rural Enhancement Service (CURES). Through the School and the Institutes, students are encouraged to participate and respond to changes in their local, national and international communities. “From building communities to building shelter, the School of Architecture programs combine to fulfill the responsibilities to teaching, research and service and to the missions of the State of Texas” says Dean Iklas Sabuoni, Ph.D.
The Community Urban and Rural Enhancement Service (CURES) focus is on helping inner city neighborhoods and rural communities in Texas identify their needs and shape their communities. They promote innovation in community planning and re-adaptive use of existing and historic structures, and provide service learning opportunities for students in all disciplines.
