Sacandaga Watershed
About The Sacandaga Task Force for Senior Living (STFSL) is a not-for-profit membership organization formed in 2006. This independent council of citizens is interested in developing or attracting senior living services in the Sacandaga basin centered on the village of Northville and the Town of Northampton. It is a grassroots effort of concerned citizens who volunteer their time to develop programs that enhance the community and the well-being of older adults in the area. Their work grew out of a concern with the plight of older individuals in the area who wanted to continue living independently but could not longer maintain their current residences due to economic or physical reasons. The group has a 9-person board of directors and its’ activities are funded by member dues. Assessment Process The STFSL conducted a survey of residents in surrounding towns in 2007 to determine their interest in a variety of services. This survey showed a high interest in affordable housing, home repair, and transportation to medical appointments and shopping. In 2008, the STFSL conducted a second survey of housing and found that older adults in the area were looking for easier living in apartment or condominium arrangements where their responsibilities for maintenance would be reduced and their opportunity for social contact and access to community amenities would increase. Summary results of these surveys can be seen in the charts at right and also can be accessed on the STFSL website.

The Communities Sacandaga is a Native American word meaning “Land of the Waving Grass,” which described the rich farm land bordering the Sacandaga River before it was damned for hydroelectric power generation in 1930. When the gates of the Conklingville Dam closed, 283 billion gallons of water covered farms, meadows, wood lots and entire villages. About the size of its better-known neighbor, Lake George, the lake is a haven for tourists and attracts older in-migrants and retirees. While currently focused on Northville [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northville,_New_York] and Northampton [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northampton,_Fulton_County,_New_York], the STFSL eventually hopes to reach residents of the surrounding communities of Benson, Bleecker, Broadalbin, Day, Edinburg, Hadley, Hope, Mayfield, Providence, and Wells. Service Population Over 18% of residents in its immediate service area (Northville and Northamption) are over age 65, compared to 12.9% in the state as a whole and 12.4% nationally.
